Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, in honor of the late marine major general, is the name just designated for the new marine corps training area on Rancho Margarita y Las Flores aka Camp Pendleton. This huge holding was one of the last remaining of the old Spanish grants, located in the northwest section of San Diego County.
General Pendleton was affectionately known as “Uncle Joe” in Coronado, where he made his home following his retirement. He served as Coronado’s mayor from 1928 to 1930, and at other times served as city councilman and as a member of the school board. He died on Feb. 4, 1942 in his Coronado home at the age of 81.
